Details:Project Fi Mobile Data/Phone Service for $30/mo
Google recently rolled out a new mobile phone/data service called Project Fi with rates half what Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile charge.

Project Fi prices:
  • $20 per month for your first phone.
  • $10 per GB of data usage, so 1GB/mo of data costs $10, 2GB/mo of data $20, and so on. Pay as you use the data with no overage penalties.
  • $15/mo per additional phone.
So the service can be as cheap as $30/mo with 1GB of monthly data usage.

Plans include:
  • Unlimited phone calls and text messaging in the US.
  • Unlimited international text messaging in supported countries.
  • Credit back on data you do not use. So if you pay $20 for 2GB but use only 1GB, they will credit you $10.
  • Tethering/Wifi hotspot included. So you can connect your tablets and laptops to the Internet through your phone.
  • Month-to-month service with no contract.
Keep in mind, large data users could be hit with hefty bills. 10 GB of data usage (which is a lot) would run you $100. Somebody would need to travel a lot (with little access to Wifi networks) to be hit with that much data usage, though.

At this time, the service is only (officially) compatible with certain Nexus and Pixel Phones, with prices ranging from $199 to $869.

Unofficially, some of the Project Fi service could be made to work on iPhones and other phones. This article explains how to get Project Fi working on iPhones and non-supported phones:
  1. You must do your initial activation by (temporarily) putting your Project Fi SIM card into an officially compatible Project Fi phone. These are the phones mentioned above that cost $199 to $869. Once activated, you can put the Project Fi SIM card into another phone.
  2. Make sure your current phone works on T-Mobile and is unlocked by your existing carrier. Most iPhone 5 and later iPhones are compatible. Project Fi uses several mobile networks in the US, including T-Mobile, giving you access to Project Fi's mobile service only through T-Mobile towers. So your service quality will only be as good as T-Mobile, versus the official phones which use other networks as well.
  3. You do not get Wifi calling in the seamless way that Project Fi offers on an approved phone, but you can still use the Google Hangouts app to make calls. This means you cannot use the regular phone dialer to make calls.
Read this article for more information.

Considering T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon all charge at least $60/mo (some over $100/mo) for 1-2 phones and plenty of data, Project Fi service could cut your fees in half (at least).

Our thoughts:
  • If you do not love your phone, the cost savings on the service makes this a hot deal for you! However keep in mind, the service is new and could have flaws. We do not know how fast the data would work and how "secure" your personal information would be on this new network.
  • If you love your phone, you may want to keep an eye on this service to see when they officially support your phone, or try the hassle of activating the service on a compatible phone and moving the SIM card to your phone.
  • If you want to stay with your current carrier and are not currently in a contract, call your carrier and mention Project Fi's rates. See if they can offer you a deep discount on your existing service plan. Most carriers in the US know they are overcharging customers, and would rather offer you a discounted rate versus losing your business to a competitor.
