Southwest does not charge for checked luggage, and does not nickle-and-dime its customers like many do. Seating is determined by order passengers board the plane. Checking-in exactly 24 hours before your departure time gives you early boarding and probably a good seat.

Families/couples who want to sit together without everyone paying the $15 early check-in fee:
  1. Pay $15 to get "automatic check-in" for 1 passenger in your party.
  2. That one person boards the plane first, finds a few available seats and "claims" them for their family soon to board the plane.
Most people should be happy to let families sit together, and not care when one person claims multiple seats.

Southwest is now one of our favorite airlines. After a recent flight was delayed for 3 hours, they gave $100 vouchers to everyone on the plane. We have experienced this and other positive experiences well above the standards set by American, Delta, and United.

Also, Southwest Rapid Rewards customers usually get free flights quicker than most other airlines' frequent flyer programs. Be sure to enroll with a Southwest account prior to booking your first flight.
