Details:Linksys WRT54GL Wireless Router for $45 after rebate
(repost)

Linksys WRT54GL Wireless & Broadband Internet Router for $65 with free shipping, and Google Checkout automatically gives $10 off. And a $10 mail-in rebate is available.

The WRT54GL has excellent reviews, and most other stores sell it for around $55 after rebate.

This is the special "Linux compatible" version, which is actually just an older version of the WRT54G router. The older router has a "hack" feature left in, which allows technophiles to replace the Linksys operating system with a Linux OS, such as DD-WRT (good GUI) and OpenWRT (for Linux command-line interface, with SSH and iptables). Some common uses for a hacked router is to boost the power of the wireless signal, generating custom firewall rules, and QoS for certain Internet traffic (for example, your VoIP and games can have higher bandwidth priority than downloads and Torrents). I even know someone who set up a PBX Inter-office Phone System using a Linksys router. The WRT54GL is basically a low powered, inexpensive, and reliable Linux router/server with a built-in Ethernet Switch and Wireless Ethernet, and with no moving parts it consumes little electricity and can be powered down without a shut down.

Linksys makes good quality routers at reasonable prices, and other newer versions are also available:
  • Linksys WRT54G for $34 after Google Checkout and mail-in rebate. That's about $10 cheaper than most other stores. Not compatible with the Linux hack.
  • Linksys WRT54GS for $47 after Google Checkout and mail-in rebate. That's about $10 cheaper than most other stores. Not compatible with the Linux hack.
  • Linksys WRTSL54GS for $95 after Google Checkout. About the same price as most other stores, but it does have free shipping. Supposedly this one can also be hacked with a Linux OS, and has more memory and a faster OS than the WRT54GL.

Advisory: This deal requires the customer to mail in at least one rebate. Make sure that you save a copy of the rebate form immediately, just in case they take the rebate form offline. It is also recommended that you mail in the rebate immediately after receipt of the item, otherwise you might forget to do so. And you should mark the maximum date that your check is expected to arrive, so that you follow up with the company if you do not receive the check in time. Rebates can be annoying, time consuming, and require a responsible person to follow the tedious rebate instructions. And, this involves the possible risk of the customer fulfilling the rebate requirements but the company choosing not to send the customer a rebate check for any reason. The more well-known or reputable the company is (the company itself, not the company's products), the more likely it is that you will get your rebate. If the rebate is from a company that you've never heard of, of if you question the company's business practices, chances are high that you will never see a rebate check. Understand that dealing with rebates are risky, so ask yourself if the product is worth full price in case you never receive a rebate check.
