Maximum wireless transmission rates are the physical rates derived from IEEE Standard 802.11 specifications. Range and coverage specifications along with the number of connected devices were defined according to test results under normal usage conditions. Actual wireless transmission rate, wireless coverage, and number of connected devices are not guaranteed, and will vary as a result of 1) environmental factors, including building materials, physical objects and obstacles, 2) network conditions, including local interference, volume and density of traffic, product location, network complexity, and network overhead and 3) client limitations, including rated performance, location, connection quality, and client condition. MU-MIMO capability requires both the router and client devices to support MU-MIMO. TP-Link HomeCareTM powered by Trend MicroTM (HomeCare) is included for 3 years from date of activation at no additional cost, after which would require an opt-in subscription at an additional cost. My Original review was 3 stars and titled Wow Am I Disappointed but I was wrong. I now realize all my issues with this router are not the Router - The Problem is the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and the horrible Marvell AVASTAR Wireless AC Network Adapter. I'm going to leave all my original comments below in hopes that they help someone.
When I connected an old laptop with wireless N - my connection strength was strong and I was able to access the management console effortlessly. So then I tried turning off the "Smart Connect" on the router and connected my surface to the 2.4Ghz band only - and no problem. But when I tried to connect the Surface to either 5 Ghz band - all my problems resumed. So then I tried one last setting to test my theory that the problem is with the Internal Surface Network Radio. I re-enabled "smart connect" on the router (enabling all three bands - 1 x 2.4 Ghz and 2 x 5 Ghz) then I went into the device manager on the surface and selected "Network Adapters" then "Marvell Avastar Network Controller" from there I could access the advanced settings which allowed me to select which wireless band I want to Use on the PC. The choices are 2.4, 5, or both. I had it set to both. I left the router with all three bands activated and told the surface to only use 2.4 - and again all my problems disappeared. I had heard about problems with the Surface Network Card, but I hadn't experienced any of them until I got this AC Router.
The TP-Link Archer AC3200 is fantastic piece of hardware and it is super easy to set up. I can now confidently give it 5 Stars.
While I love the form and function of my Surface Pro 3 The Marvel Network Adapter Sucks.
UPDATE:ADMIN PANEL PROBLEM SOLVED
OK Problem #1 is solved. I called my ISP because my connection speeds were so slow and we discovered there is a problem with Windows 10. The Windows Update Feature in Windows 10 operates an optional peer to peer distributed network to push out its updates. This essentially turns your PC into a server to push out updates to and from others and it slows down network connection speeds. This feature by default is on - you have to turn it off. Go to Settings / Update & Security / Windows Update / Advanced Options / Choose How Updates Are Delivered / Click the link and toggle to off. Reboot the PC and Reboot the router. That problem is solved. Now I can log into the admin panel quickly and easily with no lag. Apparently it's a known issue and many ISPs are reporting it to Microsoft.
None-The-Less My connections strength and speed have not improved. Infact I would say my connection spped to the router has worsened in the last 6 hours. I was getting 500 to 700 Mbps connection speeds and now I'm consistently getting 55 to 144 Mbps which is simply unacceptable for an AC Router.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Wow Am I Disappointed
I bought this new Archer Tri-Band AC3200 because the Reviews here were so universally good. I have not had that experience.
I bought this to Replace a Netgear N900 WNDR4500 because I wanted faster speed and stronger signal. It seems I lost both.
I have several problems with this new Router:
1. Weaker Signal: I placed the new router in exactly the same location as the former but no matter where in the house (Single Floor 1100sqft condo) where I had 5 bars of signal I now have 3 or 4
2. The web based interface at http://tpwifilink.net is completely frustrating. It often refuses to connect no matter what browser I'm using (Chrome, IE, Firefox, MS Edge). The status bar just spins and spins and spins ...... it can take up to 5 minutes to get logged into the admin panel and then when I do, switching from Basic to Advanced Mode causes the admin panel to crash and I have to start all over again. I'm so frustrated.
I bought this router because the reviews an Amazon were spectacular but my experience is that this is the worst piece of Hardware / Software I've owned in over a decade. I did update the firmware to the latest release (0.9.1 0.1 v004b.0 Build 150831 Rel.48329n) which incidentally was published yesterday (Sept. 11, 2015). And on my network I've got the following devices:
•2 Surface Pro 3 PCs with AC WiFi Adapters (wireless)
•1 Ethernet Printer Hardwired
•1 Chromecast
•2 Windows Phones
•1 Android Tablet
•4 SONOS Devices Running on its own mesh network with 1 SONOS Boost wired into the router
•1 ReadyNas Wired into the router.
There's nothing out of the ordinary here and like I said its a single floor and relatively small space and both speed and range are reduced while the web interface is horrifically unresponsive. I'm glad I haven't sold the Netgear Router yet. These 6 Antenna and Tri-Bands have not lived up to their promise.
Today we have one from the TP-Link folks who decided to make a "Spider Router". I turned mine over with the legs extended and decorated it with big eyes and fur! Simply splendid!
So, lets get to my review cause it's Thursday and I have nothing better to do...and I've had like 3-4 beers.
So...I guess I have to state the router I am replacing. Well, I am replacing a VERY good router called the Netgear Nighthawk. I bought the Netgear cause it had a cool name. Na, I actually bought it because it was highly recommended and I need a place to put my beer (my desk is REALLY cramped!). To my surprise the router worked VERY well for about 1.5 years. Then... well...I spilled a terrific IPA beer on it and...I guess... it got hammered and decided to throw up a couple of very nasty fingers at me and stop working. So, off I go to get a new one.
I looked on the web and man! Have you seen the prices of these routers? Asus wanted like four hundred bucks for a router with similar specs! Well, that eats directly into the monthly beer budget so...no beuno! That Spanish for not a prayer in hell!
So after looking around the Inter-Tubes for a while I stumbled across this little beauty. I looked at the specs (I'm a BIG spec...dude) wanting to make sure it was beer and anger throwing proof. Alas... not in the warranty but, it does come with a 2 YEAR warranty vs. the others who only have one...so..it has that going for it! I also noticed this baby comes with three co-workers (they call them processors... whatever...) to assist with heavy load traffic and man... can I generate some "load traffic" especially after about 6 beers. So... what the hell... let's do this!
I ordered it from Amazon as I do everything else in my life. I'm so damn lazy I even have one of Amazons detergent buttons on my washer! Go to the store and buy laundry soap...how 1980's!
Anyway, I get the router, plug it in and configure it. I highly recommended you do this pre-beer consumption. Typing those numbers into that browser bar is a pain in the buttocks after about three.
So, I get the router up and running, extending the spider legs and started to test around the house. Not bad. Not bad at all actually and my XBOX just LOVES having its own channel. No more Madden 16 "connection to the network has been lost" for me! Love...LOVE having my own channel!
Now this baby comes with 1x2.4GHz and 2x5GHz which means you, as the administrator, can have your own 5GHz channel! No kid sharing. No wife gaming and chick band YOUTUBE streaming, just a dedicated channel for ESPN and XBOX and\or PlayStation gaming. Yes... you can have your own channel! So sweet.
I've had this router now for about a month and I have to say, for the price I paid it was SO worth the purchase. I mean, you get a 2 year warranty, 1 chief processor and three minion co-worker...dudes (okay...fine...processors), half a gig of RAM (that's a lot for a router), all kinds of cloud sharing for a kids, and a print server if you so desire to go that route. Personally... I just hooked mine up via WPS to the router and all is well.
Now, the bad (not really bad, just a lack of features).
If you are in the market for a router that can do IDS (Intrusion detection) and has a built in anti-virus, well...you have to pay for that thus the reason the Asus routes are so expensive. They have to recover their costs somewhere folks.
Also, this router does not have the high-end routing capabilities the ASUS has but it does offer some (as I call it...) mid-level routing functions which for me is just fine.
So, I saved two hundred bucks over the Asus router by going this route. Pretty much the same hardware as the Asus for 1/2 the price (actually a little better from what I can tell). I got a two year warranty which is stellar for this kind of router AND I got a place to put my keys. Yeah... no more beer on the router.
If you are in the market for a new router that has terrific distance, easy set-up, fast speed, dual 5GHz wi-fi, 4 processors, and a pretty cool design seriously consider this router. I'm personally very pleased with it.
