Bonus content and maps make this Ultimate version a no-brainer. But still, requires that $$$ PSP subscription to really use them.
As a parent who has tried to minimize the first person shooter stuff my 13 year old plays, I'm pleased that this can be played without any gore, blood, extreme violence or language (unless they have a headset). I've got no issues with those things as an older teen or adult, but this game prooves it isn't necessary to still have a great time. I never realized it before this game, but none of the Star Wars movies ever had extreme violence, blood or extreme language. Of course, slicing open a tauntaun or removing Luke's hand while he still needed it might be considered exceptions... :)
It might be considered a little boring or limited when it comes to weapon choices and options compared to other FPS games, but I like simple. Every weapon has pros and cons...typical trade-off stuff. It will take you a LONG time to work through the Jaba challenge contracts to earn extra stuff.
Highly recommend!
PROS:
- Game play similar to Battlefield (same game developers)
- 10 different multiplayer modes with up to 64 players
- Daily Bounties (credits)
- Four Expansion packs (Death Star, Bespin, Outer Rim, & Rouge One:Scarif)
- Over 10 different maps
- Play as Heroes and Villains such as Han Solo, Bossk, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker
- Over 50 different weapons and vehicles including AT-AT, AT-ST, X-Wing, and the Millennium Falcon
CONS:
- All maps are not played by everyone
- Certain items require to you to grind a lot to obtain it
- Some Heroes/Villains are more powerful than others(ie. Luke Skywalker over Darth Vader) I know it's just a game but some of it needs to be tweaked
Again this is just my interpretation of this game. To give you an idea of how much I love this game, I've stopped playing Destiny over this game.
Battlefront also plays extremely well, especially when you're piloting an AT-AT or an X-Wing/TIE Fighter. Shooting and strafing is fluid and ridiculously easy to pick up (there's no recoil on most of the guns so be weary of that), and the "star cards" and arsenal provide enough variety to encourage different styles of play - especially in the objective-based modes like Walker Assault.
The Ultimate Edition comes with all of the DLC for Battlefront, which means that you'll have access to dozens of different maps, battles, game modes, and characters right from the start. There's a lot to sink your teeth into, and it'll take quite some time to become a pro with all the variations you'll have to consider.
Those of you who want the full Star Wars experience, however, will be disappointed. Unlike the movie-mirrored battles, the single-player mode is ridiculously shallow and somewhat repetitive; perfect for the most casual of SW fans who just want a quick hit of nostalgia for 30 minutes. The gameplay, while solid, is also relatively unspectacular, and if you happen to already own Titanfall 2 or Battlefield 1 (or even Overwatch, another golden AAA product) then Battlefront will feel like superficial child's play in comparison. There are Hutt contracts that you have to pay for in order to do specific challenges to collect certain guns and star cards, which makes absolutely no sense to me. In addition, some of the game modes (Blast, Heroes Vs. Villains) are totally forgettable, sacrificing all matter of substance and structural depth for brain dead head-on action.
This isn't a 4-star game, per-se: Despite looking near photo-realistic with a perfect re-imagining of the Star Wars brand, overflowing with features and having air-tight FPS/Third-Person shooter gameplay, it's rough around the edges and lacking some much-needed depth in a number of areas. However, this isn't a 3-star game, either: Star Wars Battlefront is a perfectly decent game in its own merits. As someone who loves Episodes 4-7 (and Rogue One), I enjoy the hell out of it everytime I pop it in, but like most perfectly decent games that fun usually has a time limit and then you move on to something more substantial.
In a nutshell: If you've watched the Star Wars films and enjoy Battlefield-inspired FPS shooters, then Battlefront Ultimate Edition is well worth its $30 price tag. Without a doubt, you'll love the living hell out of it for quite some time. I highly recommend everyone else who's interested to temper their expectations first before buying.
My Personal Score: 7.5/10
It's beautiful, it's fun, but unless you're playing online, it can become repetitive quickly. As someone who regularly plays classic games as well, I'm not enthusiastic about the longevity of this title.
