Good Device, Fax Fix, no real tech-support

Good Device, Fax Fix, no real tech-support
Update: 16 June 2019This is a good device, however there is major lack of technical support or bug fixing on PolyCom's end. As others have stated, when dialing some phone numbers, when the person answers, all that can be heard is loud static. I have found this issue happens every time with several phone numbers, most have been AT&T cellular phones. When I contacted PolyCom about the issue, they stated they were aware and blamed it on google, when google blames it on PolyCom.From the looks of it, this has been an issue for a long time. I have tried these affected numbers with other Google Voice bridge devices, and have not had any issues. Additionally, the Plus/Premium package is not worth the money, as the CallerID function was useless most of the time. The voice assistant can't seem to find anything that you ask of it.Another important glitch; if you power cycle your modem/router, 60% of the time, this device will not reconnect on its own until it is power cycled. For a free phone service, this isn't bad, but its not great. These little headaches are worth saving $90 a month for phone service.* Original Review *After having major issues with Centurylink landline and DSL, I cut the cord and switched to a much cheaper internet-only cable plan. The issue with this: I still needed to have 2 telephone lines to fax and make calls on my phones; The solution: The OBI202. Baring some issues with sending faxes (solution below), and having to hunt the PolyCom forums for tech support, this is a great device.Setup through the online portal is fairly straightforward, enter the OBI number and start connecting your service providers. I used 3 unique Google Voice accounts to have a separate phone number for fax, general calls, and my home office. If you plan on using this in a fairly simple "plug a phone into the port and that's it" method, the online portal will be just fine. However, if you want to get into more in-depth settings, such as codecs, fax settings, distinctive rings, etc. you have two options: enable and use the internal web-portal, or use the expert configuration on the OBI website. I prefer the internal web-portal (to enable, dial ***0, 30#, 1, 1#, 1) as I don't have to worry about certain settings get over-written by the OBI Provisioning tool. Making and receiving calls via google voice sounds amazing, most people have commented on how much clearer the calls sound.I wanted to be able to use the existing telephone jacks and wiring in my apartment, so I disconnected the physical in-bound phone line from CenturyLink (This is VERY important, if you just plug this device into a wall-jack that is still connected to a TelCo line, you can break the device) and patched it in to have Line 1 go to the majority of my apartment, and Line 2 directly to my home office. This is of course not the simplest (or arguably best) way to go about this, however it has yet to fail to me. It is important to note that if you are going to use this method, you should make absolutely sure you have disconnected both the physical line that goes to the telephone company (use a volt meter to check) and the grounding line (if equipped). After doing this, you can plug LINE 1/2 out from the OBI202 into any phone port in your home/office, and use the other ports as normal. The biggest issue, as many have pointed out, is that OBI Tech Support doesn't seem to actually exist. Thankfully, a simple Google Search for OBI and the problem your having will take you to the OBI/PolyCom forums where people are quite helpful.Helpful Tips/Tricks for Faxing with GV:Faxing via Google Voice can be a bit of an issue (at first). I found that there were some key changes that needed to be made by using a Star Code and changing some basic fax machine settings.1. Set your fax machine to use the slowest fax speed, and turn off Error Correcting Mode.2. In your OBI dashboard, Under the service provider list, click on OBI Expert Configuration, then Enter Expert Mode3. On the left column, towards the bottom; Click Star Codes, and then profile A.4. Make a new Star Code with the following: *01, Modem Call, set($Noji1,200),set($Noec1,1),set($Cdm1,3)5. Click Submit/Save.(Repeat Steps 3-5 for profile B)6. On your fax machine, set the dialing prefix to be *01. (Or, dial *01 before a fax number when sending)7. If you want to use a specific service provider/account for your fax machine, you can set the prefix to be *01**N, where N is the Service provider number (1-4).Additionally, you can setup your fax and OBI to use a distinctive ring for incoming faxes, so that your fax machine can use the same line as your phone, but still have its own number. Under the expert menu described above, go to the Voice Services, pick your fax account, and scroll down to "X_DefaultRing", uncheck the box for default settings, then uncheck the second box. Set this to 3 (Double Ring), and hit submit. On your fax machine, configure it to only answer a distinctive or double ring.

Obi202 and voip.ms are a perfect match, bought this about 15 months ago, and have no problems at all, no dropped calls, just pure gold so far. First year was only using it as a secondary line beside our landline phone, now Use it as main line and secondary with zero issues, setting up isnt for the faint hearted, this was my first voip device but got it going first shot. Think obi charges a fortune for 911 access etc, dont need that, pay 1.75 or whatever it is per month with voip.ms and can select that this number has 911 access from within the obi settings. Will change review if device ever gives any problems etc.
