Great functionality, reasonable installation but does not look so good...

Great functionality, reasonable installation but does not look so good...
Other than 3 Amazon outlets, Everything else in my home automation is from Meross. This helps a lot because I only need an Alexa and a Meross account for all the automation devices like bulbs, garage door opener and switches. I was a little reluctant to pay the price for this 3 way dimmer but I already had a 3 way conventional dimmer in the kitchen and I had to get this so all the lights are controlled by Alexa. Not that I am a super fan of turning on the lights by voice but it is convenient to say “Alexa, goodnight” and have all the lights turned off automatically. I would recommend this 3 way kit if you do not mind the weird look (and reason I gave it only 4 stars) because they are reliable and have been working as advertised.Installation:First let me say that I am an electrician and worked in the business for many years so for me it was very simple to install and in some cases reconfigure the wiring of my house to work with this kit but if you have no knowledge of wiring, I strongly suggest that you get an electrician to install these switches – Note that this is a 3 way dimmer kit which means that you will receive 2 switches and you will have to replace both existing 3 way switches.1) Installation is easy as long as you have the necessary wires in the switch boxes and that is not just a neutral. (See Wiring Considerations below)2) The Meross app gives step by step instructions on how to install the switches with very good illustrations3) They come with some adhesive labels that you can use to mark the wires so once you disconnect the old 3 way switch, you will not mix the wiring. The Good:1) Both switches have the on/off button and the dimmer control buttons on them. Conventional dimmers are installed only on one of the switches and if you dimmed the light on the dimmer side, you cannot change the light intensity from the other 3 way switch. This Meross dimmer will allow to change the light intensity no matter which of the 2 switches you are using.2) Meross has very good illustrated instructions for installation and configuration.3) The switches are not bigger than conventional dimmers or a GFI outlet so they will fit in single gang boxes without a problem as long as the box is not used as a junction for other wiring.4) Simple to configure. Once the switch is connected to power, the Meross app will guide you through connecting to the switch via WiFi and configuring it to use your home WiFi. Then it is ready to be controlled from the app.5) Easy integration with Alexa. After the switch is installed and configured on the Meross app, add the Meross skill to Alexa and have Alexa discover new devices. The switch will appear in the Alexa app and it is ready to be controlled by voice.6) The switch that connects to the power side has status indicator lights on them that are on even when the light is off so you can find the switch in the dark. (More on this under “The Ugly”)7) WiFi connection is very stable and you can check the signal level from the app.8) Does not need WiFi to operate as a manual switch. The Bad:1) Meross does not use Z-Wave or any other home automation protocols. Each device needs an IP address and a typical home network has a total of 255 IP addresses that it can use so there are limitations that may be a problem if you own a big house or you have too many devices on your network. Note that anything that is connected to the Internet in your home uses an IP address so chances are that you already use tenths of addresses. To find out how many addresses are in use, you can login to your home router and look at the DHCP information.2) It takes a second or two for the action to take place through voice control. Although this is normal because Alexa needs to convey the command to the Amazon servers and the Amazon servers to the Meross servers and from there back to the device, it gives you a funny feeling of uncertainty when you say “Alexa, turn off the light” and nothing happens right away. It gets even more complicated if you have multiple of these devices and Alexa may respond positively but turned off the wrong light. Controlling the switch from the Meross app however, is instant.3) If you will use a cover plate with screws, the screws are tight to screw on because of the plastic holes and while this is a minor thing, I do not like it when I get the feeling that I am forcing the screws to go in. They do come with clip-on plates but those plates are too thick and they will work if you are installing in a single gang box only so I would not use them. The Ugly: The following things may seem minor but in general they give a weird look.1) The switch that connects to the power side of the circuit has a red LED indicator at the base of it and 5 green LEDs on the side that show the current brightness selected. For one thing, the red status LED is too bright and in total darkness draws your attention too much. What is worse is that the brightness green light stays on even when the light is off. These strong red and green lights give an unnatural look for a switch and since I got them around Christmas, the switch looked like it was part of the décor. I think that it would be nice if the red LED was on when the light is off but not as strong and the brightness green lights should be completely off when the light is off. Now, I am not asking for anything crazy here since the Meross single poll dimmer switch does not have the brightness indicators on when the light is off so they are doing this for their other products already. There is also a blue LED with the red to show that the light is on but the red does not turn off so it has a funny purple color (blue and red) when the light is on.2) You have the ability to turn off the red LED from the app but I would prefer it if I could turn off the bright green one.3) The switch that connects to the light bulb side, does not have any brightness indicator lights on it but the buttons are off center (as if it had indicator lights) and that does not look good. It also has a blue indicator LED that turns on when the switch is on but does not have a red LED that stays on when the light is off like the other switch does.4) The top and bottom of the switches are thicker than other switches and as a result, the trimming will not be flush with the wall if it is installed in an old work box. However, it is barely noticeable and I can live with it compared to the cover plate that is provided by MerossWiring considerations:I would like to say first that I am not providing the following information as an installation guide and if you have never done any work with line voltage wiring or you do not feel that you know what you are doing, you should have an electrician do this for you. This work will require you to remove the switches from their boxes and while you have the wires all exposed and some of them disconnected, you will need to turn the power back on and test in order to identify the wires you need to connect to this 3 way kit. Needless to say, you must do this making sure that no one will be near these boxes while the wires are exposed while you turned the power back on. Don’t forget that most people do not look at a switch when they are about to turn on a light so if you went in the basement to turn the power on and the wires are exposed in an area out of your sight, it is possible that someone else in the house may just reach out to turn the light on and touch the live wires. And, after someone gets shocked, they may come after you so the risk of injury or death is there even if they survive 😊There are multiple ways to wire 3 way switches but you should at least know that 3 way switches have a common contact (typically the contact with the black screw). One switch has the tail end of the light bulb connected to its common contact and the other switch has the power wire connected to its common contact (Meross marks the power/hot wire as “live”). In order to install this kit, you need to make sure that the box that houses the switch with the power wire on its common contact, also contains a white neutral wire. Keep in mind that not every white wire in a 3 way switch box is neutral and if you have a white wire that is connected to any of the switches contacts, it is definitely NOT a neutral.I do not want to bore you with details of what you may or may not have in your switch box but you should know that it is possible to have a 2 gang box that contains a neutral and power wire but the 3 way switch in it is connected to the light bulb and not the power and that will not work so you need to make sure that you located the switch with the 110V power on the black screw and the box of that switch has a neutral wire in it. If you have a neutral but the common contact does not have a power wire connected to it, you can still make it work without running new wires but I suggest to have an electrician reconfigure your 3 way wiring so you end up with the right wires in the right box.Do not use a Non-Contact tester to determine if a wire is hot or not. Electricians use these testers as a quick validation that a box has a power wire in it or an outlet is live but never rely on a Non-Contact tester to identify a single power wire. If you will do this work, you will need a voltage tester or a multimeter that has 2 leads. You should disconnect the wire from the common contact of the switch to test it for power. If you do not wish to disconnect the wire from the common contact (black screw) make sure that the switches are in a position where the light would be off before testing. Touch one lead on the ground wire and the other on the black or red wire you disconnected to see if there is voltage. If you find voltage (110-120V) on that wire, you found the power wire. Remove the tester lead from the ground and touch it to the white wire that you believe is a neutral. If you get voltage between the power wire and the white wire, then you have a neutral.Good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars Meross makes Overall a Great Product
Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2019
Overall this is my second product with Meross, which includes the garage opener. The instructions to installing this was fantastic. The in app installation guide is great and had this hooked up in less that 15 minutes. Please note that you cannot split these switches into 2 different 3 way switches. Overall the build quality feels great, it does not feel cheap and is definitely built too last. It works great and I have no real complaints with the product.

Pros
- Quality is great, button presses do feel strong and does not feel like it will wear out
- Great installation App, Walked me right through and was able to install easy.
- Works with Alexa flawlessly.

Cons
- Though people like that it doesn't require a hub, it would be nice if this had integration with Smartthings. Though you can create a virtual switch within Smartthings, You cannot control the dimming feature.
- Buttons are kind of small, I've noticed that I'm trying to feel for the power button in a dark room. Wish it had a more similar design like the Belkin Dimmer switch where it resembled more of a rocker style where you can just push and slide your finger for the dimming preference.
