Subject: Regarding your Best Buy PC 4000 DDR Memory

Yes, there are a lot of computers that can use this RAM.  Intel makes an
800mhz bus, and going forward, that is where most (if not all) Intel PC's
will be using.  So, this is a very pertinent RAM for the masses.   And
512MB is not a bad place to start...

I think the 800MHz buses all require DDR memory to be installed in pairs, ala "dual-channel", making two 400MHz memories run at 800MHz, ala the 800MHz bus rating?

The latest Intel P4s have a FSB of 800MHz. This is a mis-nomer because the actual clock going to the RAM is 400MHz, but data is collected on the rising edge as well as the falling edge of the clock, thereby providing an effective throughput of 800MHz. The higher speed memory sticks available are for over-clockers who wish to push the performance of their systems beyond the rated specifications of the processor. With appropriate cooling of the processor (and a motherboard that will allow bios timing tweaks), people have been able to push the FSB beyond 1GHz. Just a little FYI.

You can use these boards with one dimm if you wish but the board will preform at a reduced level. Many everyday users will not notice the impact. I own this memory and this is a very good deal to anyone who is an overclocker or is looking to have something that will follow them through to their next upgrade path. Also Newegg regulerly lists this ram for as much as 155$ per 512mb stick, the lowest I have seen it before today is 119$ which is Frys everyday price.
